COURSE NARRATION: CONTACT LENS CLINIC III

COURSE CODE: OPTC401

Course Description:

This course will cover further introduction to other types of contact lenses both in design and materials and contact lens solutions. The practical application the major instruments such as the slit-lamp, keratometer, radiuscope and other contact lens measuring as well as inspection devices. The use of these instruments will be applied for specific lens routine, the use of these instruments to determine the indications and contra-indications, assessment of fit for contact lens use by patients. Students will be introduced to diagnostic and general staining solutions like fluorescein, rose Bengal and lissermine green.

The course covers:

Course Aims: To further develop students to contact lenses identification in terms of the material and design. Students are expected to practice and formulate contact lens routine as opposed to ordinary eye examination routine, evaluate suitability of patient to contact lens wear and enhance their skills on the use of the slit-lamp, the keratometer and other pieces of equipment essential in contact lens routine. The use of instruments in contact lens evaluation, fitting and identification of adverse reaction to contact lens use will be taught. Students will be exposed to the various dyes, their application and specific uses. Students will be expected to use measurements from instruments to decide on selection of lenses, in terms of type, material and design to meet purpose of contact lens use. Students will be expected to practice and familiarise with the specifics of ordering of contact lenses.

Course Objectives:

By the end of the course students will be able to:

  1. Identify the various types of contact lenses in terms of material and design.
  2. Use the different types of equipment for specific purpose within a contact lens routine.
  3. Model a contact lens routine.
  4. Fit and assess inappropriate and appropriate contact lens
  5. Evaluate the importance of aseptic technique when handling and dispensing contact lenses.
  6. Demonstrate the use of basic contact lens solutions (chemical composition uses and adverse effects)
