AIMS OF COURSE:

-to develop abilities and skills such objectivity, integrity, insight and initiative that is relevant to the study of science

-to stimulate students, create and sustain their interest in chemistry and understand its relevance to society

-discuss bonding, structure and nomenclature of organic compounds and their corresponding functional groups

-appreciate the synthesis, functional groups, interconversions of aliphatic compounds and the concept of aromaticity and its consequences on chemical reactivity

OBJECTIVES:

Students will

-interpret and use nomenclature, general formulae and displayed formulae of given classes of compounds

-interpret and use terminology associated with organic reactions

-describe optical activity and identify chiral centres and/or cis/trans isomerism in a molecule given  a structural formula
